The four-round Celtic Cross: your tarot year 2027

Read the whole year at once: your life foundation, the year two months at a time, the future by age band, and love and family. Forty cards with a summary that links every round, your year card, lucky numbers, colours, days and a timing calendar. Step by step, no experience needed.

Why read four rounds?

A single Celtic Cross answers one question well, but a year of life holds many stories at once. Thai tarot readers therefore lay a “big reading”: four Celtic-Cross-sized rounds in a row, ten cards each, each looking at life from a different side, then joined into one picture. Round one shows who you are, round two what the year brings period by period, round three where life is heading by age band, and round four love and family.

Because it takes time and focus, most people do the big reading once a year: at New Year, on their birthday or at Songkran. This page lets you do the whole set yourself, either letting the site shuffle or using your own deck and entering the cards. Every step is written so that someone who has never read tarot can follow it.

Outcome

What you gain over single readings is the connections: cards repeating across rounds, a lifelong lesson returning this year, the age band you are in, and outcomes on four levels: life, this year, the future and love. You also get your year card, personal year number, Key of Life, elements, lucky numbers, colours, days and direction, and a timing calendar for the whole year.

The new year 2027 is close. Give it 20–30 minutes, open all four rounds and keep the summary to look back on all year.

Start the four-round reading

Before you start

  • 20–45 quiet minutes. Do not rush; finish reading each round before opening the next.
  • Your birth date places the age bands of round 3 and gives your year card and personal year. You can give your age instead.
  • A 78-card deck (if you use real cards), Rider–Waite–Smith or one with the same meanings.
  • Decide on reversals at the start and keep the same choice for all four rounds.
  • Paper or a phone. Photograph each round so you can compare it with real life at the end of the year.

Step by step

  1. Set your intention for the round. Each round has its own focus, such as round one's “Who am I, where do I come from, and where is life taking me?”
  2. Shuffle thoroughly. At least seven riffle shuffles, or wash the cards on the table until it feels right. With reversals, turn half the deck now and then.
  3. Cut into three piles. Choose the pile that draws you, put it on top and gather the deck.
  4. Lay ten cards on the layout. Take them from the top one by one and place them in the order 1 to 10 for that round. Do not pick cards.
  5. Turn the cards over in order. Flip each card sideways like the page of a book so its orientation stays true, and note whether it is upright or reversed.
  6. Read each position with the tables below, or choose “Use my own deck” in the tool and enter the cards for an interpretation.
  7. Return the cards and reshuffle before every round. Each round uses all 78 cards, so a card can repeat; a repeated card is the cards repeating a message to you.
  8. After four rounds, read the connections described below, and choose three pieces of advice you will actually act on this year.

Round 1: Natal / Life Foundation Reading

The first round uses the standard Celtic Cross: six cards in a cross (1 in the centre, 2 laid across it, 3 below, 4 to the left, 5 above, 6 to the right), then cards 7 to 10 in a column on the right from bottom to top, the same layout as this site's Celtic Cross reader.

1The querent · your true selfYour basic nature and the energy you carry through life. In this round, this card is “you”.
2Your lifelong lessonThe obstacle or lesson that returns in several chapters of life. Once you master it, it becomes a strength.
3Roots · family and childhoodYour family background, what shaped you as a child, and the deep drives underneath.
4The chapter just closedWhat happened recently that still affects you today.
5Your ideal · what your life aims atYour highest aspiration and the best your life can reach.
6The next chapterThe energy coming into your life next.
7Your stance · how you meet lifeYour way of thinking and the attitude you bring to the world.
8People and surroundings · home, family, workHow others see you and the environment you live in.
9Deep hopes and fearsWhat you hope for and fear at once, which are often the same thing.
10Life direction · the gift to useThe overall direction of your life if you use your foundation fully.

Tip: always read card 1 first, because it is the querent of the whole set, then ask how every other card helps or crosses it. Major Arcana in this round are life-level matters; court cards in positions 1, 7 and 8 usually describe your character or someone important around you.

Round 2: Current Situation / Annual Reading

This round keeps the cross but gives it new meanings. Cards 1 and 2 are the year's overview. Cards 3 to 8 are six two-month periods, laid clockwise around you (below, left, above, right) and up the staff. Card 9 is the year's advice and card 10 the picture when the year closes.

In the Thai practice readers often go month by month from the month of the reading. This page groups the months in pairs so that ten cards cover all twelve months, and offers four starting points:

  • January (calendar new year)
  • April (Songkran, Thai new year)
  • Your birth month (your personal year)
  • This month (the next 12 months)

Beyond the periods, number and court cards also carry dates through their Golden Dawn signs and decans; the Six of Wands, for example, is Jupiter in Leo, about 12–22 August. The tool turns these into a timing calendar for the year.

Round 3: Future Outlook Reading, cards by age band

Which round puts the cards on age bands? Round 3, in the four-round practice of Thai readers. This round is not laid as a cross but in three rows of three cards; each row is one decade of age, split into 4–3–3 years. For someone aged 25: card 1 is ages 20–23, card 2 ages 24–26, card 3 ages 27–29, card 4 ages 30–33, card 5 ages 34–36, card 6 ages 37–39, card 7 ages 40–43, card 8 ages 44–46, card 9 ages 47 and up, and card 10 sits apart as the summary.

Finding your bands: use the age you reach in the year you are reading. The top row starts with the decade that age is in (under 20, start at 10); the middle and bottom rows are the next two decades. Each decade splits into its first four years, middle three and last three. The last slot of the bottom row stays open into later life.

How to read it: bands already lived are your accuracy check; if the past cards match real life, give more weight to the future bands in the same row. The band you are in now deserves the closest reading, and compares directly with the year's theme in round 2. A heavy card ahead is not a verdict but a signpost to prepare.

Some readers also put ages on the positions of the foundation round. This page keeps age bands in round 3, the clearest form of the practice, so the reading stays simple.

Round 4: Love and Relationship Reading

The last round returns to the cross, but every position is seen through the heart: card 1 is you in love, card 8 your partner, someone coming in or family, and card 10 where love and family are heading. It works whether you are single or in a relationship.

A court card in position 6 or 8 often means a real person; its sign and element hint at their temperament. The Queen of Cups, for example, is a gentle, watery person.

Joining the four rounds into one story

This is what sets the big reading apart. The tool does it automatically; if you read by hand, work in this order.

  1. Cards repeated across rounds are the clearest message of all. Different orientations mean the matter has a flowing side and a blocked side.
  2. You from three sides: compare card 1 of the foundation, year and love rounds. The same or friendly elements mean you can be yourself all year; contrary elements mean the year or love is pulling you out of old habits.
  3. This year in the long view: compare the year's theme (round 2, card 1) with your current age band in round 3.
  4. Is an old lesson returning? Compare card 2 of the foundation (your lifelong lesson) with card 2 of the year (the year's challenge).
  5. Outcomes on four levels: read card 10 of every round together: life, this year, the future and love.
  6. Two kinds of roots: card 3 of the foundation and love rounds shows how family shaped both how you live and how you love.
  7. People and hopes: compare cards 8 and 9 of the foundation and love rounds.
  8. The whole forty: count elements, Major Arcana and frequent numbers. The weakest element is what to add to your life this year.

Year card, numbers, Key of Life, elements and lucky things

The year card

Add your birth day, birth month and the year you are reading, then add the digits until you reach 22 or less: that is your Major Arcana card for the year (22 is the Fool), following Mary K. Greer. Born 14 March, reading 2027: 14 + 3 + 2027 = 2044 → 2+0+4+4 = 10, the Wheel of Fortune. If your year card actually turns up in one of the rounds, it is a very strong sign.

Personal year number

Reduce your birth day, birth month and the year read to single digits and add them: 14 → 5, March → 3, 2027 → 11 → 2, total 10 → 1, a year of beginnings.

Personal yearTheme
1a year of beginnings: start the job, project or chapter; what you plant now grows for nine years
2a year of partnership and patience: focus on your partner, allies and details; things grow slowly but deeply
3a year of expression and joy: communicate, create, socialise and widen your network
4a year of foundations: hard work, order, buying or fixing a home and putting your finances in order
5a year of change and freedom: travel, move, try new things, but keep your discipline
6a year of love, family and responsibility: home, partnership and caring for each other come forward
7a year of reflection and study: good for learning, spiritual practice and deep work rather than expansion
8a year of results, money and authority: past effort pays off; good for negotiating and promotion
9a year of completion: release what has run its course, give, and clear space before the new cycle

Birth cards (Key of Life) and Life Path

Add your birth day, month and year and reduce to 22 or less for your personality card; reduce to one digit for your soul card. That digit is your constellation: every card reducing to it speaks to you directly, and the tool lists the ones that appear in your reading. The Life Path number follows standard numerology.

Elements, colours and direction

Count the elements of the year round. The strongest element is the year's main energy and gives your colours and direction; the weakest is what to add, so it gives the boosting colours and activities. Directions follow the Golden Dawn.

ElementColoursDirection (Golden Dawn)Add it by
Firered, orange, goldsouthstart things, exercise, take on a challenge

Lucky days and numbers

Lucky days come from the planet of your year card and of the year's theme card (sign cards use the sign's ruler). Lucky numbers combine your personal year, your year card, the theme card's number and the numbers that appear most among the forty cards. Use them to colour personal choices, not for gambling.

10Life direction · the gift to useThe SunYour life points toward success and joy, a beautiful outcome, and the whole round says you can reach it.

How a reader joins this round: Card 1 is the Queen of Wands: Fern is warm, confident and a natural leader. Her lifelong lesson is the Four of Pentacles, holding on too tightly for fear of losing what she has. Her ideal is the Star, to inspire others, and her life direction is the Sun. Both are Major Arcana, so her life has a clear, bright direction. Her deep fear is the Nine of Swords, overthinking, which pairs with the reversed Knight of Wands: when anxious, she rushes.

How a reader joins this round: The year's theme is the Ace of Wands, a year of new starts, matching her personal year 1. Six cards of the Wands suit appear, so it is a year of work and action. March–April draws the Wheel of Fortune, which is her own year card, so it marks the year's turning point. July–August draws the Five of Pentacles: watch money. September–October brings the Six of Wands, recognition. The year ends with the Ten of Pentacles, security for home and family. The advice is Temperance: do not take on so much that November–December becomes the Ten of Wands.

How a reader joins this round: Fern turns 33 in 2027, so the first row is her thirties. Her current band draws the Knight of Pentacles, steady building. Ages 34–36 draw the Two of Cups, love and partnership. Ages 37–39 draw the Tower, a big change to prepare for, before the Six of Swords carries her to a new path at 40. The curve rises again in mid-life and ends with the World. The summary card is the Queen of Wands, the same card as her querent in round 1: her best future is being fully herself.

How a reader joins this round: In love, Fern is the Knight of Cups, romantic and led by the heart. Her test is the Two of Swords, hesitating to choose. The root of how she loves is the Emperor, a strict father figure, which is also her birth card (number 4). Love coming in is the Two of Cups, the same card as ages 34–36 in round 3: two rounds point at the same thing, so a serious relationship stands out in the next few years. The person coming in is the King of Pentacles, stable and caring, and the outcome is the Ten of Cups, a warm family.

The summary that links all four rounds

Your four-round reading for 2027 is “very good”. The year's theme is Ace of Wands, the strongest period is Sep–Oct, and the card the reading repeats is Queen of Wands.

  • Queen of Wands appears again in round 1, round 3. The cards repeat confidence and warmth to you; this is the clearest message of the whole reading.
  • Two of Cups appears again in round 3, round 4. The cards repeat mutual love and partnership to you; this is the clearest message of the whole reading.
  • You from three sides: your foundation is Queen of Wands, this year you are Ace of Wands, and in love you are Knight of Cups. Foundation and year: same element, strongly reinforcing. Foundation and love: contrary elements; find the balance.
  • This year in the long view: the year's theme, Ace of Wands, falls in the band ages 30–33, which drew Knight of Pentacles (elements that do not clash). This year opens a rising stretch in the long view.
  • Your lifelong lesson is Four of Pentacles; this year challenges you with Five of Wands. Bring what the old lesson taught you to the new matter.
  • Outcomes on four levels: life The Sun; this year Ten of Pentacles; future Queen of Wands; love Ten of Cups. Most outcomes are good; the whole reading opens the way for you.
  • Two kinds of roots: the root of your life is Six of Cups and the root of your love is The Emperor. Together they show how family shaped both how you live and how you love.
  • Your year card for 2027 is Wheel of Fortune (number 10). Your personal theme for the year is cycles, fate, turning point.
  • Your year card actually appeared in round 2, a very strong sign that this theme is the heart of the year.
  • Personal year 1: a year of beginnings: start the job, project or chapter; what you plant now grows for nine years.
  • Life Path 4: the builder — learning order, discipline and stability.
  • Birth cards (Key of Life): The Emperor (4), constellation 4
  • Your birth card The Emperor appeared in round 4. The cards are speaking directly about your true self.
  • Cards of constellation 4 (your Key of Life) in the reading: Four of Pentacles, Four of Wands, The Emperor
  • Lucky numbers for the year: 1 5 · year card number 10
  • Lucky colours: red, orange, gold (the year's dominant Fire) · boosting colours: blue, sea green, silver (to add the year's weakest element, Water)
  • Lucky days: Thursday (Jupiter) and Tuesday (Mars)

Common mistakes

  • Redrawing until you like the cards. The big reading means something only as the cards of that moment, so the tool keeps your result to review all year.
  • Treating a hard card as a verdict. A heavy card is a signpost; every position says what you can do.
  • Reading cards one by one without the whole. Always look at elements, Major Arcana and repeated cards first.
  • Skipping the past bands. The lived bands of round 3 tell you how closely the cards speak to you.
  • Mixing reversal rules between rounds. Choose one rule for the whole set.

Good to know

Tarot is a tool for reflection and entertainment; there is no scientific evidence that cards predict the future. The four rounds help you look at life from several sides at once and plan the year mindfully. For health, legal and financial matters, always consult a professional.

The four-round structure follows the practice of Thai tarot readers; card meanings follow the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, and elements, signs and the Tree of Life follow the Golden Dawn. All signs are tropical.

Frequently asked questions

What is the four-round reading, and how is it different from one Celtic Cross?

It is four rounds of ten cards in a row: life foundation, the year, the future by age band, and love and family, joined into one picture. A single Celtic Cross is best for one question.

Which round puts each card on an age band?

Round 3, the future. It is laid in three rows, one decade each, split 4–3–3 years. At age 25: card 1 = 20–23, card 2 = 24–26, card 3 = 27–29, and so on to card 9 = 47 and up, with card 10 as the summary.

Do I reshuffle before every round?

Yes. Return all 78 cards and reshuffle each time. A card can therefore repeat, and a card repeating across rounds is the cards stressing a message.

How often should I do it?

Once a year is enough, at New Year, your birthday or Songkran; keep the result to review. For specific questions during the year, use the ten-card Celtic Cross or the three-card reading.

Can I do it without a birth date?

Yes, give your age instead. The age bands of round 3 still work, but there will be no year card, personal year or Key of Life.

Can I use my own deck?

Yes. Choose “Use my own deck and enter the cards”, lay the cards on each round's layout and pick each card and its orientation; the interpretation and links are the same.

Should I use reversed cards?

Either way works, but keep the same choice for all four rounds. Reversals add detail about what is blocked or delayed.

Does a hard future card mean life will go badly?

No. A heavy card is a signpost to prepare, for example by building savings, caring for your health and keeping relationships strong. Every position tells you what you can do.

How are the lucky numbers and colours worked out?

Lucky numbers come from your personal year, your year card, the year's theme card and the numbers most frequent among the forty cards. Colours come from the strongest element of the year round; boosting colours from the weakest.
