Imagery and symbols

A ferryman poles a boat carrying a cloaked woman and child, six swords standing in the boat. The water is rough on one side and smooth on the other as they head for the calmer shore: transition, travel and leaving hardship behind.

  • The ferrymanHelp from others, someone guiding us through a hard time, or the strong part of ourselves still at work.
  • A cloaked woman and a childVulnerability and lingering sorrow; those being carried to safety.
  • Six swords standing in the boatMemories and wounds carried along. We do not leave the past entirely behind, but it does not stop the boat.
  • Rippled water on one side, smooth on the otherMoving from turbulence to calm.
  • A distant shore with treesA new, calmer destination; a future not yet clear but better than before.

Details most readers miss

  • The water on the right of the boat is choppy while the left is smooth. The journey is carrying us from rough water to still, even before we reach the shore.
  • The passengers sit with their backs to us, not looking toward the old shore. What matters in a transition is facing where you are going.
  • The woman is not poling the boat herself. The card is about accepting help; in some seasons of life we do not need to hold the pole ourselves.

History and origins

The Golden Dawn named this card the “Lord of Earned Success” and gave it the second decan of Aquarius, ruled by Mercury. The planet of thought and communication in the sign of vision and the future helps you see a way out and plan change rationally.

Smith drew a ferryman poling a boat carrying a cloaked woman and a child toward a distant shore, six swords standing upright in the boat. Waite reads the card as a journey by water, a route, a way out, an envoy and an expedient that works.

The story of the card

After the conflict of the Five, the traveller decides to leave. He boards the boat with his sorrow and wounds, knowing the place ahead will be better.

But the new shore has its own test: the next card, the Seven of Swords, is cunning, strategy or shortcuts — and whether they stay honest.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star
Friendly element (supports)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement
Opposing element (weakens)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World

When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.

Sign, planet and timing

This card rules decan 2 of Aquarius (10°–20° Aquarius), ruled by Mercury in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 30 Jan – 8 Feb each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.

Its meaning blends Mercury (communication, trade, study, paperwork) with Aquarius, a fixed Air sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is The Star, and the card of the same planet is The Magician.

Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence

Minor cards numbered 6 belong to constellation 6 with The Lovers, The Devil, the chooser who learns about love, desire and what binds the heart. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Air. The number itself means harmony, healing and giving.

On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 6, Tiphareth · Beauty: harmony, the centre of the self, in Yetzirah · world of formation and thought.

Path on the Tree of Life

12345678910
Sephirah 6

Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 6, Tiphareth · Beauty — harmony, the centre of the self — on the Middle Pillar of Balance. The Swords suit belongs to Yetzirah · world of formation and thought, so this card is the force of Tiphareth working in that world.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Apollon.

  • Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
  • Apollon (Apo)Apollon, the first of Friedrich Sieggrün's points, means multiplication and spread: knowledge, trade, reputation and success that reaches beyond oneself. Keywords: expansion, multiplicity, science, commerce, success, fame

This match comes from the element of the Swords suit and the decan's planet, Mercury.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
