Celtic Cross tarot reading

Type your question, shuffle with real shuffle models (riffle, overhand, table wash), cut into three piles and lay out ten cards in Waite's Celtic Cross. The reading follows your question, elements, signs, numbers and the Tree of Life.

Want the whole year at once? The four-round reading covers your foundation, the year two months at a time, the future by age band and love: forty cards with your year card and lucky numbers.

Four-round reading

The ten positions of the Celtic Cross

A. E. Waite published the Celtic Cross in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot in 1910, and it became the world's most popular spread. The first six cards form a cross for the situation and its timeline; the four on the right form a staff for you, your surroundings, hopes and the outcome.

PositionMeaning

Why a real shuffle

78 cards can be ordered in about 1.13 × 10115 ways, or about 3.42 × 10138 counting upright and reversed. Typical software draws a new order in one step; here every card moves according to a model of each shuffle.

  • Riffle: the Gilbert–Shannon–Reeds model. The cut follows a binomial distribution and cards fall from the fuller half more often. Bayer and Diaconis (1992) showed that 78 cards need about 9–10 riffles to approach randomness, more than the seven for a 52-card deck.
  • Overhand: packets are pulled off the top, reversing packet order while keeping the order inside each packet. It mixes very slowly, needing on the order of n² log n repetitions.
  • Table wash: diffusion of each card's position and angle. About 30 seconds mixes the deck well, and a card ends up reversed when its angle turns past half a circle.

The mixing meter compares the order before and after with rising sequences, neighbour pairs kept and Spearman correlation. Randomness comes from the browser's crypto.getRandomValues mixed with the timing of your taps and keystrokes.

How the reading works

Each card carries the correspondences of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the root of the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. Cards 2–10 rule decans (10° of the zodiac), court cards rule spans across two signs, and the Major Arcana belong to the Hebrew letters and the 22 paths of the Tree of Life. The reading uses elemental dignities to see which neighbours support or weaken each other, fits a least-squares trend through positions 3, 4, 1, 6 and 10, and gives timing from the outcome card's decan using a solar position formula. Add your birth date to include your sun sign, Life Path number and birth cards.

Frequently asked questions

What questions suit the Celtic Cross?

Complex matters where you want the whole picture: a relationship with many factors, a career change or a big decision. For simple questions, one or three cards are clearer.

How many times should I shuffle?

With riffles alone, 78 cards need about 9–10. A table wash needs about 30 seconds in total. Watch the mixing meter on the page.

What do reversed cards mean here?

The card's energy is blocked, delayed or internal. For heavy cards, a reversal can mean the situation is easing.

Is my question stored?

No. Your question and birth date are processed in your browser only. The device keeps just the deck order so the deck continues from last time.
