Upright meaning

In general

Competition, disagreement or a situation where everyone talks at once. It need not be bad — it may be a heated brainstorm or a contest that sharpens your skill. What matters is not tying your ego to winning every time.

Love

Small quarrels born of difference, or a rival for someone's affection. A relationship with tension but also attraction; talking openly beats bottling it up.

Work and study

Workplace competition, meetings full of conflicting views, or business rivalry. Good for pitches, contests and work that requires reasoned argument.

Money

Price competition or income you have to fight for. Avoid financial decisions while your temper is up.

Health and vitality

Surplus energy that needs an outlet; team sports or competition help. Leo rules the heart and back — watch accumulated stress.

Inner life and growth

Learning from conflict: other people's differences reveal your own blind spots.

The card's advice

Turn the competition into brainstorming: set clear rules and let everyone speak in turn.

Reversed meaning

In general

Avoiding conflict until it festers, or conflict escalating beyond healthy competition. The other side is agreement: the chaos begins to settle.

Love

Resentment held in until it explodes — or, positively, a couple finding a shared solution after an argument.

Work and study

Office politics and backstabbing, or, on the bright side, a team beginning to reach agreement.

Money

A money dispute that should be settled once and for all.

Health and vitality

Unvented stress affecting the body; find a creative release for your energy.

Inner life and growth

Inner conflict; several desires pulling in different directions.

The card's advice

If this fight has no real prize, step back. If it does, speak plainly under fair rules.

Imagery and symbols

Five young men in different clothes brandish wands in a chaotic clash. No one is hurt; it looks more like practice or a contest than war — clashing ideas and competition with no winner yet.

  • Five youths brandishing wandsMany opinions that do not agree. Everyone has equal strength, so no one wins yet.
  • Clothes of different colours and stylesDifferent backgrounds, views and goals: diversity that has not yet found harmony.
  • No one is hurtA fight not meant to destroy — a contest, a debate or practice rather than real war.
  • Wands pointing every wayChaos without a shared direction; energy spent on clashing rather than building.
  • Open ground with no castleThere is no prize to fight over yet. The struggle may be more about ego than real stakes.

Details most readers miss

  • Look closely and no one is clearly aiming at a particular opponent; many wands simply knock together in mid-air. The conflict here is usually more messy than dangerous.
  • After the calm of the Four, Five shakes stability in every suit, but the Five of Wands is the lightest Five: no loss as in the Five of Cups, no defeat as in the Five of Swords.
  • Saturn in Leo is someone who wants to shine but is held down. Conflicts at work under this card often come from competing for space and recognition rather than from the work itself.

History and origins

The Golden Dawn called this card the “Lord of Strife” and gave it the first decan of Leo, ruled by Saturn. Saturn, the planet of limits, sits in the sign of the Sun that longs to shine; the result is friction, frustration and being blocked when you want to express yourself.

Smith drew five young men in different clothes brandishing wands at one another. Waite describes it as mimic warfare, more like a game or contest than real battle. Older meanings therefore include competition, the struggle for gain and the everyday fight of life.

The story of the card

After the celebration of the Four, the people who rejoiced together start having ideas of their own. Everyone wants to lead, to propose, to make their way the main way; unity turns into competition.

Whoever comes through this chaos with patience and skill is recognised in the next card, the Six of Wands, riding home as the victor.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Fire, the energy of drive, courage and action.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Fire is friendly with Air and opposed to Water. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement
Friendly element (supports)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star
Opposing element (weakens)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon

When Fire dominates a spread: heat, haste and acting before thinking — watch for conflict and burnout. When it is missing: Add Fire by taking one small action now, setting a challenging goal and moving your body.

Sign, planet and timing

This card rules decan 1 of Leo (0°–10° Leo), ruled by Saturn in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 23 Jul – 1 Aug each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.

Its meaning blends Saturn (limits, time, discipline, responsibility, lessons) with Leo, a fixed Fire sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is Strength, and the card of the same planet is The World.

Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence

Minor cards numbered 5 belong to constellation 5 with The Hierophant, Temperance, the teacher and mediator who passes on values and finds the middle way. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Fire. The number itself means conflict, instability and change.

On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity: discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict, in Atziluth · world of will.

Path on the Tree of Life

Sephirah 5

Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity — discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict — on the Pillar of Severity (left). The Wands suit belongs to Atziluth · world of will, so this card is the force of Geburah working in that world.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Zeus and Admetos.

  • Zeus (Zeu)Zeus is force aimed at one target, like fire inside an engine or a guided projectile. It reads as action, ambition, production and bringing something new into being. Keywords: creative force, fire, machines, directed energy, leadership, initiation
  • Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings

This match comes from the element of the Wands suit and the decan's planet, Saturn.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
