Imagery and symbols

A knight sits still on a heavy black horse standing calmly, a pentacle in his hand, ploughed fields before him. He is the only knight whose horse isn't moving: patience, responsibility and steady work.

  • A large horse standing stillStability, patience and no hurry — the only Knight whose horse is not moving.
  • A pentacle in his handA tangible goal; responsibility held steadily.
  • A ploughed fieldHard work done; preparation for harvest.
  • Oak sprigs on helmet and bridleThe oak grows slowly but strong and long-lived: endurance and strength.
  • Heavy armourProtection, caution and readiness to handle risk.

Details most readers miss

  • Of the four Knights, only his horse stands still. Speed is not his strength; consistency is what gets him to the goal.
  • Waite notes that he holds the pentacle without looking at it. He knows the goal is already in hand, and his eyes are on the work ahead.
  • The card rules mostly Taurus, giving Taurean patience, stability and love of comfort, mixed with the eagerness to begin of late Aries.

History and origins

In the Golden Dawn this card is the “Prince of the Chariot of Earth”, the Air of Earth, ruling from 20° Aries to 20° Taurus. Air within earth is thought put to practical use: realistic planning carried out step by step.

Smith drew a knight on a large dark horse standing still, holding a pentacle, before a ploughed field; oak sprigs decorate his helmet and the horse's head. Waite describes him riding a slow, enduring, heavy horse that matches his own aspect, holding his symbol without looking at it, and reads the card as utility, serviceableness, interest, responsibility and rectitude.

Rider–Waite–Smith names the court cards Page, Knight, Queen and King, while the Golden Dawn used Princess, Knight, Queen and Prince; the Golden Dawn Knight is the Fire figure and corresponds in energy to a King. This site uses the pairing common in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition: King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.

The story of the card

The Page's dedication to learning becomes steady action. The Knight of Pentacles does not chase dreams like the other Knights; he moves forward one steady step at a time until the work is done.

When this diligence learns to nurture others, it grows into the Queen of Pentacles; when it learns to manage wealth, it becomes the King of Pentacles.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Earth, the energy of money, work, the body and tangible security. As a court card it is "Air of Earth", blending the qualities of both.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Earth is friendly with Water and opposed to Air. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World
Friendly element (supports)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon
Opposing element (weakens)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star

When Earth dominates a spread: clinging to security and possessions; slow to move or change. When it is missing: Add Earth with a step-by-step plan, a budget and timeline, and care for your body.

Sign, planet and timing

This court card rules 20° Aries – 20° Taurus of the zodiac, straddling two signs as in the Golden Dawn system. The Sun passes through it around 10 Apr – 10 May, and people born then are often shown by this card when a reading asks about a person.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Admetos and Poseidon.

  • Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings
  • Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity

This match comes from the element of the Pentacles suit, and the court card's sub-element, Air.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
