Two of Swords Tarot card meaning (สองดาบ)
The Two of Swords is a stalemate of our own making: refusing to decide with eyes covered, a temporary truce, or keeping balance by not looking. The card asks you to remove the blindfold and face the information you have been avoiding.

Upright meaning
In general
A stalemate, fear of deciding, or keeping the peace by not mentioning the problem. You may be waiting for more information or afraid of the consequences. Not choosing is also a choice; wait too long and circumstances will choose for you.
Love
A relationship stuck halfway, avoiding an important conversation, or hesitating between two people. There may be a truce after a quarrel, but the real issue is unresolved.
Work and study
A pending decision, two offers you cannot choose between, or staying neutral in a team conflict.
Money
Hesitating between financial options, or not daring to look at the real numbers. Open the accounts and see everything before deciding.
Health and vitality
Stress from indecision. Libra rules the kidneys and lower back. If you have been avoiding a check-up, go.
Inner life and growth
Listening to both reason and feeling, not to one side only.
The card's advice
Take off the blindfold, gather the information you have avoided, and set yourself a deadline to decide.
Reversed meaning
In general
Avoided information coming to light and a decision now due — or so much information that confusion grows. A truce may collapse as the truth comes out.
Love
The truth in the relationship exposed; time to choose whether to continue.
Work and study
A conflict in which you can no longer stay neutral.
Money
Hidden financial problems that must be faced.
Health and vitality
Stress built up from keeping problems hidden.
Inner life and growth
Accepting a truth you did not want to see.
The card's advice
Choose the path that fits your values, even if it is not the most comfortable.
Imagery and symbols
A blindfolded woman sits on a bench by the sea, two swords crossed over her chest, rocks and a crescent moon behind. She covers her eyes so she needn't choose and her heart so feelings can't enter: stalemate and avoided decisions.
- A blindfoldChoosing not to know, refusing information that would force a decision — or setting aside bias to judge impartially.
- Crossed arms holding two swordsProtecting the heart; two lines of thought balanced so neither wins.
- Sitting with her back to the seaEmotions left behind; trying to use reason alone without listening to feeling.
- Rocks in the waterHidden obstacles; problems unseen because the eyes are covered.
- A crescent moonIntuition and feeling still waiting to be heard; the Moon rules the decan.
Details most readers miss
- She sits on a solid bench and no one has tied her, unlike the Eight of Swords. The stalemate here is chosen, and the blindfold can come off at any time.
- The two swords are long and heavy; holding them like this for long takes effort. Not deciding is not rest — it is a hidden strain.
- In some decks Justice is blindfolded, but in this one Justice looks straight at us while the Two of Swords is blindfolded: the difference between judging by seeing the truth and avoiding judgement altogether.
History and origins
The Golden Dawn named this card the “Lord of Peace Restored” and gave it the first decan of Libra, ruled by the Moon. Libra seeks balance and the Moon brings feeling and adaptation; the result is peace through compromise — but possibly a fragile one.
Smith drew a blindfolded woman on a stone bench, arms crossed holding two swords over her chest, with a rocky sea and a crescent moon behind her. Waite reads it as the equipoise of conformity, courage, friendship and concord in a state of arms: peace in which neither side has put down its sword.
The story of the card
The clarity of the Ace splits into two paths. She knows she must choose, but choosing means losing something, so she covers her eyes and holds both swords still.
When the avoided truth finally arrives, the next card, the Three of Swords, is the pain that must be accepted.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules decan 1 of Libra (0°–10° Libra), ruled by Moon in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 23 Sep – 2 Oct each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.
Its meaning blends Moon (emotions, home, ebb and flow) with Libra, a cardinal Air sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is Justice, and the card of the same planet is The High Priestess.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
Minor cards numbered 2 belong to constellation 2 with The High Priestess, Justice, Judgement, the knower who sees inner truth and weighs every side. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Air. The number itself means choice, balance and partnership.
On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 2, Chokmah · Wisdom: the initiating force, raw drive, in Yetzirah · world of formation and thought.
Path on the Tree of Life
Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 2, Chokmah · Wisdom — the initiating force, raw drive — on the Pillar of Mercy (right). The Swords suit belongs to Yetzirah · world of formation and thought, so this card is the force of Chokmah working in that world.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Cupido.
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
- Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging
This match comes from the element of the Swords suit and the decan's planet, Moon.
This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
