Imagery and symbols

A king sits on a throne decorated with bull heads, his robe embroidered with grapevines, holding a sceptre and a pentacle before a solid castle; armour shows beneath the robe at his foot: material success, steady leadership and wisely managed wealth.

  • A robe of grapevinesAbundance so blended with him that they cannot be separated; success as part of identity.
  • Bulls' heads on the throneTaurus: stability, patience and material strength.
  • A sceptre with an orbWorldly power, control of resources and social influence.
  • A pentacle in his handWealth he earned himself and is ready to manage further.
  • A castle behindSomething built to last; an enduring kingdom.
  • A fertile gardenThe fruit of long care and investment.

Details most readers miss

  • His grapevine robe merges with the plants around him until they are hard to tell apart. The King and his wealth are one — a strength, and a warning not to let possessions become your whole identity.
  • Many readers note that the foot peeking out from under his robe is armoured: today's comfort was won by past battles, and he is still ready to defend what he built.
  • The throne bears Taurus' bulls, though the card rules Leo to Virgo. The bull here stands for the element of Earth as a whole rather than a particular sign.

History and origins

In the Golden Dawn the card matching the King of Pentacles is the “Lord of the Wide and Fertile Land, King of the Spirits of Earth”, the Fire of Earth, ruling from 20° Leo to 20° Virgo. Fire within earth is the force that makes land yield: ambition that builds tangible things.

Smith drew a king on a throne carved with bulls' heads, wearing a robe covered in grapevines, holding a sceptre topped with an orb and a pentacle, with a castle and garden behind. Waite says the figure calls for no special description and reads the card as valour, realising intelligence, business and intellectual aptitude, sometimes mathematical gifts, and success in these paths.

Rider–Waite–Smith names the court cards Page, Knight, Queen and King, while the Golden Dawn used Princess, Knight, Queen and Prince; the Golden Dawn Knight is the Fire figure and corresponds in energy to a King. This site uses the pairing common in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition: King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.

The story of the card

The Page's knowledge, the Knight's diligence and the Queen's nurture reach their fullness in the King. He has built a secure kingdom and knows how to manage it so that wealth grows and benefits others.

When the King passes his wealth and wisdom to the next generation, a new seed is planted and the cycle of the Pentacles begins again with the Ace.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Earth, the energy of money, work, the body and tangible security. As a court card it is "Fire of Earth", blending the qualities of both.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Earth is friendly with Water and opposed to Air. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group

Friendly element (supports)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon
Opposing element (weakens)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star

When Earth dominates a spread: clinging to security and possessions; slow to move or change. When it is missing: Add Earth with a step-by-step plan, a budget and timeline, and care for your body.

Sign, planet and timing

This court card rules 20° Leo – 20° Virgo of the zodiac, straddling two signs as in the Golden Dawn system. The Sun passes through it around 13 Aug – 12 Sep, and people born then are often shown by this card when a reading asks about a person.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Admetos and Zeus.

  • Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings
  • Zeus (Zeu)Zeus is force aimed at one target, like fire inside an engine or a guided projectile. It reads as action, ambition, production and bringing something new into being. Keywords: creative force, fire, machines, directed energy, leadership, initiation

This match comes from the element of the Pentacles suit, and the court card's sub-element, Fire.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
