Upright meaning
In general
Hope returns. After a hard time the mind settles and opens to good things again. A time of healing, inspiration and looking to the future with confidence. Set new goals; dreams you had put aside may become possible again.
Love
Healing, pure, hopeful love. Those recovering from disappointment can open up; troubled couples find understanding again. You may meet someone who makes you believe in love again.
Work and study
New inspiration, creative or social-impact work, or recognition of your talent. Good for art, media, technology and work for the common good.
Money
Finances gradually recover; funding or help arrives when needed.
Health and vitality
Recovery and healing; body and mind return to balance. Aquarius rules the ankles and circulation; drinking water and resting the mind help a lot.
Inner life and growth
Trust in life and the universe; meditation under the night sky; openness to inspiration.
The card's advice
Write down one thing you still hope for, then do one small thing today that brings you closer to it.
Reversed meaning
In general
Hopelessness, lost inspiration or disbelief that anything good will happen. Old pain may not have healed, or hopes may be set unrealistically high. Reversed, the card asks you to replenish yourself first.
Love
Not ready to open up because of old wounds, or idealising love until reality disappoints.
Work and study
Burnout, no sense of meaning, or feeling your efforts go unappreciated.
Money
Money worries keep you from seeing a way out.
Health and vitality
Emotional exhaustion affecting the body; rest and talk to someone.
Inner life and growth
Lacking faith in yourself or in life.
The card's advice
Hope doesn't need to be grand. Start with something small that makes today better than yesterday.
Imagery and symbols
- A great eight-pointed star and seven smaller onesA guiding light and cosmic power; the seven may be the seven classical planets or the seven chakras.
- The naked womanSincerity and a vulnerability that no longer needs defending. After the Tower, she has nothing left to hide.
- Water poured into the pool and onto the landReplenishing both the mind (pool) and the material world (land). The water on land splits into five streams — the five senses.
- One foot in the water, one knee on landBalance between intuition and reality, like the angel of Temperance.
- The ibis in the treeWisdom, thought and the mind's new beginning.
- The distant mountainThe goal visible again after the storm.
Details most readers miss
- The Star is the first image after the Tower with a clear, open sky — no clouds, no walls. Healing happens in the open, when there is nothing left to guard.
- Aquarius is the water-bearer, matching the woman pouring water; the card speaks of sharing good things with all, not keeping them.
- 17 reduces to 8, sharing a constellation with Strength: real hope needs inner courage.
History and origins
In the Visconti–Sforza deck the Star is a robed woman holding up a single star. The Marseille deck changed it to a naked woman kneeling and pouring from two jugs beneath eight stars — the model for the Rider–Waite–Smith image.
The Golden Dawn gave the card Aquarius and Tzaddi (fish-hook), the hook that draws good things up from the mind's deep waters. Smith added an ibis in the tree, the bird of Thoth, Egyptian god of wisdom and writing. In the Thoth deck Crowley swapped the letters of the Star and the Emperor, giving the Star Heh.
The story of the card
After the Tower falls, the Fool stands in emptiness — but in that darkness he sees the Star for the first time. The Star is gentle healing, hope that depends on nothing outside.
Its light is still faint, and the next card, the Moon, leads him through darkness and uncertainty before the full light of the Sun.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules Aquarius ♒︎, a fixed Air sign ruled by Saturn. The Sun passes through Aquarius (tropical zodiac) from 20 Jan – 18 Feb each year, and people born then often recognise this card's energy in themselves.
the energy of persistence — this matter succeeds through steadiness, but beware stubbornness The ruling planet adds themes of limits, time, discipline, responsibility, lessons.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
The card's number 17 reduces to 8, so it belongs to constellation 8 together with Strength. This group is the one with inner courage and a hope that does not go out. If your birth-date total is 17, this is your Personality card and card 8 is your Soul card.
To find your birth cards with Mary K. Greer's method, add your birth day, month and year, then add the digits until the result is 22 or less. Born 14 June 1990: 14 + 6 + 1990 = 2010 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3, the Empress.
The same card can also be a "year card" when you use the current year instead of your birth year, and the "quintessence" of a reading when the numbers of all cards in the spread reduce to 17.
Path on the Tree of Life
The 22 Major Arcana are the 22 paths (numbered 11–32) linking the ten sephiroth of the Tree of Life. This card is path 28, joining Netzach · Victory (emotion, desire, endurance) with Yesod · Foundation (the subconscious, dreams, inner images), and the Hebrew letter צ Tzaddi, meaning "fish-hook".
Read as a journey of the mind, the path teaches how to bring the power of Netzach down into Yesod, or how to climb from below to above. It crosses between the pillars, so it works to reconcile two forces.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Apollon.
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
- Apollon (Apo)Apollon, the first of Friedrich Sieggrün's points, means multiplication and spread: knowledge, trade, reputation and success that reaches beyond oneself. Keywords: expansion, multiplicity, science, commerce, success, fame
The Star is hope and pure inspiration, Poseidon; Apollon is the water spreading out to nourish everything.
