Imagery and symbols

A queen sits on a throne at the water's edge decorated with cherubs, gazing deeply at an ornate lidded cup with angel handles. Hers is the only closed cup in the suit: deep feelings held within, and intuition.

  • A covered cupThe only lidded cup in the suit: deep, sacred feeling kept safe, not opened for everyone to see.
  • Angels on the cupLove with a spiritual dimension; intuition connected to something higher.
  • The queen gazing at her cupDeep contemplation of the inner world; listening to her own heart and others'.
  • A throne at the water's edgeShe sits on land with her feet near the water: balance between feeling and stability.
  • Water nymphs and children on the throneThe power of water, motherhood and nurture.
  • A shell behind the throneThe sea, beauty and the goddess of love born from the foam.

Details most readers miss

  • Her cup is the only covered cup in the Cups, unlike the open cup of the Ace. True compassion does not mean keeping your heart open to everyone all the time.
  • The cup resembles a vessel used in religious ritual: she treats feeling as sacred, not something to hide or be ashamed of.
  • The card rules mostly Cancer, bringing Cancer's mothering, protectiveness and attachment to home, mixed with the perceptiveness and communication of late Gemini.

History and origins

In the Golden Dawn this card is the “Queen of the Thrones of the Waters”, the Water of Water, ruling from 20° Gemini to 20° Cancer. Water upon water is the purest and deepest feeling: the capacity to perceive, reflect and hold every kind of emotion.

Smith drew a queen on a throne at the water's edge, gazing intently at an ornate covered cup adorned with angels. Waite describes her as beautiful and dreamy, but not only a dreamer: she sees and also acts, and her activity feeds her dream. She is love and wisdom together.

Rider–Waite–Smith names the court cards Page, Knight, Queen and King, while the Golden Dawn used Princess, Knight, Queen and Prince; the Golden Dawn Knight is the Fire figure and corresponds in energy to a King. This site uses the pairing common in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition: King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.

The story of the card

The outflowing romance of the Knight of Cups deepens into steady understanding. The Queen does not need to travel in search of love; she is the source of love where others come to rest.

If the Queen is deep feeling from within, the King of Cups is the one who masters emotion steadily, even in the middle of a rough sea.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Water, the energy of emotion, love, relationships and intuition. As a court card it is "Water of Water", blending the qualities of both.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Water is friendly with Earth and opposed to Fire. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

Friendly element (supports)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World
Opposing element (weakens)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement

When Water dominates a spread: sensitivity and emotional decisions — you may drown in feelings or fantasy. When it is missing: Add Water by naming your feelings, listening to people close to you and giving time to relationships.

Sign, planet and timing

This court card rules 20° Gemini – 20° Cancer of the zodiac, straddling two signs as in the Golden Dawn system. The Sun passes through it around 11 Jun – 11 Jul, and people born then are often shown by this card when a reading asks about a person.
