Upright meaning
In general
A hard time: money problems, illness or feeling shut out. Do not carry it alone; help may be closer than you think. Look for it and ask. This difficult season will pass.
Love
A relationship going through hardship together, or loneliness even within a relationship. Money trouble may strain love; the person beside you in hard times is precious.
Work and study
Job loss, reduced income or feeling overlooked at work. Reach out to your network and look for help; there may be opportunities you have not seen.
Money
Money trouble, debt or worry about expenses. List the resources you really have, and seek advice from professionals or organisations that can help.
Health and vitality
Weakness or illness. Taurus rules the throat and thyroid. Do not neglect treatment because of cost; look into the support you are entitled to.
Inner life and growth
Feeling far from faith or hope; the light in the window says hope is still near.
The card's advice
Tell one person you trust that you are struggling. Asking for help is courage, not weakness.
Reversed meaning
In general
Beginning to recover from hardship, receiving help or finding a way out; finances slowly improving — or, on the other side, hardship dragging on because you will not ask for help.
Love
A relationship growing warm again after a hard time, or reconciling with someone you drifted from.
Work and study
A new job, or improving conditions at work.
Money
Finances beginning to recover; a way out of debt.
Health and vitality
Health gradually improving with proper care.
Inner life and growth
Hope returning, and seeing that help is real once you open yourself to it.
The card's advice
Accept the help offered with gratitude, and when you are able, pass it on to someone who is struggling.
Imagery and symbols
Two poor figures, one on crutches, trudge through snow past a lit stained-glass church window bearing five pentacles. Help is within reach, but neither looks up: hardship and feeling left out in the cold.
- Two figures walking through snowHardship to be faced — but not alone; someone walks alongside.
- Crutches and bandagesIllness or injury; physical vulnerability that comes with financial trouble.
- Bare feet in the snowLacking basic necessities; feeling unprotected.
- A lit stained-glass windowHelp, faith or shelter close by, which they have not yet seen or dared to enter.
- Five pentacles in the glassWealth inside; resources that really exist but feel out of reach.
- Falling snowA cold season; hardship from outside circumstances, which does not last forever.
Details most readers miss
- Both figures pass the lit window without looking. Help is often close, but shame, pride or exhaustion keep us from asking.
- The two walk together. The hardship here is not entirely solitary; Waite himself included meanings of partners who stand by each other in hard times.
- The difficulty in the Five of Pentacles is no one's fault; snow falls on everyone. The card invites kindness toward yourself and others who are struggling.
History and origins
The Golden Dawn called this card the “Lord of Material Trouble” and gave it the first decan of Taurus, ruled by Mercury. Mercury's quick, restless mind in a sign that craves security produces worry about money, work and livelihood.
Smith drew two destitute figures trudging through snow past a lit stained-glass window, one on crutches and bandaged, the other wrapped in a shawl, barefoot. Waite describes two mendicants in a snowstorm passing a lighted casement and reads the card as material trouble and destitution — yet, interestingly, he also gives it meanings of love and partners: people who stay together in hard times.
The story of the card
The fear of loss in the Four comes true, or at least feels as if it has. The traveller finds himself outside, cold and in want.
When help arrives, or when he learns to ask, the next card, the Six of Pentacles, is giving and receiving that gets resources flowing again.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Earth, the energy of money, work, the body and tangible security.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Earth is friendly with Water and opposed to Air. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
| Friendly element (supports) | The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
When Earth dominates a spread: clinging to security and possessions; slow to move or change. When it is missing: Add Earth with a step-by-step plan, a budget and timeline, and care for your body.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules decan 1 of Taurus (0°–10° Taurus), ruled by Mercury in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 20 Apr – 29 Apr each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.
Its meaning blends Mercury (communication, trade, study, paperwork) with Taurus, a fixed Earth sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is The Hierophant, and the card of the same planet is The Magician.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
Minor cards numbered 5 belong to constellation 5 with The Hierophant, Temperance, the teacher and mediator who passes on values and finds the middle way. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Earth. The number itself means conflict, instability and change.
On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity: discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict, in Assiah · world of matter.
Path on the Tree of Life
Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity — discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict — on the Pillar of Severity (left). The Pentacles suit belongs to Assiah · world of matter, so this card is the force of Geburah working in that world.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Admetos and Apollon.
- Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings
- Apollon (Apo)Apollon, the first of Friedrich Sieggrün's points, means multiplication and spread: knowledge, trade, reputation and success that reaches beyond oneself. Keywords: expansion, multiplicity, science, commerce, success, fame
This match comes from the element of the Pentacles suit and the decan's planet, Mercury.
This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
