Three of Swords Tarot card meaning (สามดาบ)
The Three of Swords is heartbreak: sorrow, being hurt by words or truth, and separation. It is the most direct card in the deck, but the rain in the picture says that tears are part of healing.

Upright meaning
In general
Sorrow, disappointment or a painful truth — perhaps a break-up, a quarrel, hurtful words or a loss. The feeling is real and must be acknowledged; do not pretend it does not hurt. Crying and talking help you get through.
Love
Heartbreak, a break-up, infidelity or wounding words; possibly a third party. If the relationship continues, the truth must be spoken and the wounds healed together.
Work and study
Disappointment at work, painful criticism, team conflict or redundancy. Separate the feelings from what needs fixing.
Money
A financial loss that stings, or an unfair agreement.
Health and vitality
Sorrow affecting the heart and sleep. Libra rules the kidneys. If the distress feels too heavy to bear, reach out to people close to you or a professional.
Inner life and growth
Learning from pain; sorrow that deepens your understanding of life and others.
The card's advice
Let yourself grieve. Write or speak what hurts, and do not carry it alone.
Reversed meaning
In general
Beginning to heal, forgiving and letting go — or, on the other side, suppressing grief until it becomes a chronic wound; pain that has not been spoken.
Love
Reconciliation after pain, forgiveness, or still clinging to an old wound you will not admit hurts.
Work and study
Recovering from disappointment and able to start again.
Money
Beginning to recover from a loss.
Health and vitality
Sorrow easing; energy slowly returning.
Inner life and growth
Letting go of past pain.
The card's advice
Ask what this wound needs in order to heal: speaking, forgiveness or distance.
Imagery and symbols
A red heart pierced by three swords hangs amid rain clouds and falling rain. There are no people, only pain made visible: sorrow, disappointment and words that wound.
- A red heartThe centre of feeling, love and human vulnerability.
- Three swords piercing itPain from thoughts, words or a truth that cuts deep; some read a love triangle.
- Storm clouds and rainGrief and tears; rain also washes and readies the soil for new growth.
- A grey skyA dark time that must be passed through; nothing hides this pain.
- No people in the picturePain that is universal; everyone has felt it, so the card does not point at anyone in particular.
Details most readers miss
- The heart floats whole in the middle of the picture; it has not shattered. The swords pierce but do not destroy: the pain is severe, but the heart survives.
- The three swords are balanced, the middle one upright and the other two angled in. Fittingly for Libra, the pain may come from weighing a truth that could not be avoided.
- Compare the Three of Cups, a celebration of three people. The Three of Swords is its opposite: a relationship involving three can lead to joy or to pain.
History and origins
The Golden Dawn called this card the “Lord of Sorrow” and gave it the second decan of Libra, ruled by Saturn. Saturn is exalted in Libra, so this is sorrow with weight that teaches, not meaningless pain.
The heart pierced by three swords is one of the clearest examples of Smith drawing on the fifteenth-century Italian Sola Busca deck, which has a similar heart pierced by three blades. Waite reads the card as removal, absence, delay, division, rupture and everything the design naturally conveys.
The story of the card
The blindfold of the Two comes off, and the avoided truth pierces the heart. The pain can no longer be dodged; it must be accepted and allowed to pass through.
After the storm of sorrow, the next card, the Four of Swords, is recovery: body and mind need quiet time to heal.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules decan 2 of Libra (10°–20° Libra), ruled by Saturn in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 3 Oct – 12 Oct each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.
Its meaning blends Saturn (limits, time, discipline, responsibility, lessons) with Libra, a cardinal Air sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is Justice, and the card of the same planet is The World.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
Minor cards numbered 3 belong to constellation 3 with The Empress, The Hanged Man, The World, the creator who makes things flourish and sees from new angles. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Air. The number itself means growth, creation and collaboration.
On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 3, Binah · Understanding: giving form, structure, boundaries, in Yetzirah · world of formation and thought.
Path on the Tree of Life
Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 3, Binah · Understanding — giving form, structure, boundaries — on the Pillar of Severity (left). The Swords suit belongs to Yetzirah · world of formation and thought, so this card is the force of Binah working in that world.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Admetos.
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
- Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings
This match comes from the element of the Swords suit and the decan's planet, Saturn.
This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
