Upright meaning
In general
Conflict, unfair competition or a costly victory. You may win but lose trust, or lose and feel exploited. Choose your battles wisely; some are not worth winning.
Love
Arguments where everyone gets hurt, wounding words, trying to win against each other. Possibly a break-up, or mistrust after conflict.
Work and study
Office politics, stolen credit, competition by dirty means or being taken advantage of. Protect yourself with evidence and integrity.
Money
Being cheated, a negotiation you lose, or money gained by improper means. Beware of agreements that look unfair.
Health and vitality
Stress from conflict. Aquarius rules the ankles and circulation; held-in anger affects the body.
Inner life and growth
Learning that being right matters less than being a good person.
The card's advice
Before fighting on, ask: “If I win, what will I have left?” If the answer is loneliness, put the sword down.
Reversed meaning
In general
Reconciliation after conflict, admitting fault, or giving up a fight not worth having. The other side is a grudge that will not end, or being exposed for using wrong methods.
Love
Efforts to reconcile, an apology, or letting anger go.
Work and study
Team conflict beginning to ease, or past wrongdoing coming to light.
Money
Some fairness restored.
Health and vitality
Stress easing once you let the fight go.
Inner life and growth
Forgiving others and yourself.
The card's advice
If you hurt someone, apologise sincerely. If you were hurt, choose how to move on without letting resentment lead.
Imagery and symbols
A smirking man gathers three swords while two others walk away dejected toward the sea, two swords left on the ground under jagged clouds: hollow victory and conflict where everyone loses more than they gain.
- A smirking man holding three swordsA winner who won ungracefully, or someone so attached to being right that he forgets the consequences.
- Two swords on the groundWeapons abandoned; the other side's surrender, or more that the winner still wants to collect.
- Two figures walking away dejectedLosers who are hurt, or people choosing to leave a fight that will never end.
- A figure covering his faceShame, sorrow or disappointment at how things ended.
- Torn clouds and a rough seaTension after conflict; calm has not yet returned.
Details most readers miss
- The winner holds three swords but has no hands free for all five. Greed to win everything usually ends with more than you can use, and no one on your side.
- There are two ways to see yourself here: the winner who lost his friends, or the one who walked away knowing the fight was not worth it. The card asks which you want to be.
- Aquarius holds to principles and being right, so this card often comes from arguments over opinions or principles rather than material gain.
History and origins
The Golden Dawn called this card the “Lord of Defeat” and gave it the first decan of Aquarius, ruled by Venus. The planet of love and harmony in a cool, principled sign lets relationships be severed by reason and ego; tenderness loses to the urge to win.
Smith drew a man smirking as he gathers swords from the ground, while two others walk dejectedly toward the sea, one with a hand over his face, under torn clouds. Waite reads the card as degradation, destruction, revocation, infamy, dishonour and loss — a victory that leaves damage on every side.
The story of the card
After recovering in the Four, the traveller returns to the world and meets conflict at once. He may win the argument, but everyone around him walks away; sharp thinking has become a weapon against relationships.
Realising such victory means nothing, the next card, the Six of Swords, is a journey from troubled water toward a calmer shore.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules decan 1 of Aquarius (0°–10° Aquarius), ruled by Venus in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 20 Jan – 29 Jan each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.
Its meaning blends Venus (love, beauty, pleasure, money) with Aquarius, a fixed Air sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is The Star, and the card of the same planet is The Empress.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
Minor cards numbered 5 belong to constellation 5 with The Hierophant, Temperance, the teacher and mediator who passes on values and finds the middle way. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Air. The number itself means conflict, instability and change.
On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity: discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict, in Yetzirah · world of formation and thought.
Path on the Tree of Life
Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity — discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict — on the Pillar of Severity (left). The Swords suit belongs to Yetzirah · world of formation and thought, so this card is the force of Geburah working in that world.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Cupido.
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
- Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging
This match comes from the element of the Swords suit and the decan's planet, Venus.
This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
