Imagery and symbols

- The infinity sign over her headLimitless mental power, linking her to the Magician: his will becomes her compassion.
- The lionLeo — desire, anger, fear and all the raw power within us, not evil but in need of guidance.
- The garland binding woman and lionBoth are tied by the softest thing; love is the strongest chain.
- The distant mountainAchievement that comes from mastering oneself.
- The yellow skyAwakened consciousness and radiant confidence.
Details most readers miss
- Readers still argue whether she is closing or opening the lion's mouth. Both give the same meaning: she handles that power without fear.
- Teth means serpent, not lion. In esoteric tradition the serpent is the life force coiled within; training that energy is the heart of the card.
- Strength (8) shares a constellation with the Star (17, 1+7 = 8): inner courage and hope are one power.
History and origins
In early decks the card was La Forza or La Force, one of the four cardinal virtues of the Middle Ages (fortitude). Some decks show Hercules clubbing a lion, others a woman breaking a pillar. In the Marseille deck the card is XI and Justice is VIII.
The Golden Dawn gave Strength Leo and the letter Teth (serpent), and Justice Libra. To keep the signs in order (Leo before Libra), Waite swapped the numbers, making Strength VIII and Justice XI. Every Rider–Waite–Smith deck, including the Universal Waite, follows this, while the Marseille and Thoth decks keep the old order.
The story of the card
After his outer victory in the Chariot, the Fool discovers that the hardest enemy is within. Strength teaches him to befriend his instincts rather than suppress them or let them rule.
This begins the inward journey that leads to the Hermit's solitude in the next card.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Fire, the energy of drive, courage and action.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Fire is friendly with Air and opposed to Water. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Emperor, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon |
When Fire dominates a spread: heat, haste and acting before thinking — watch for conflict and burnout. When it is missing: Add Fire by taking one small action now, setting a challenging goal and moving your body.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules Leo ♌︎, a fixed Fire sign ruled by Sun. The Sun passes through Leo (tropical zodiac) from 23 Jul – 22 Aug each year, and people born then often recognise this card's energy in themselves.
the energy of persistence — this matter succeeds through steadiness, but beware stubbornness The ruling planet adds themes of identity, success, recognition, vitality.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
The card's number 8, so it belongs to constellation 8 together with The Star. This group is the one with inner courage and a hope that does not go out. If your birth-date total is 8, this is your Personality card and card 8 is your Soul card.
To find your birth cards with Mary K. Greer's method, add your birth day, month and year, then add the digits until the result is 22 or less. Born 14 June 1990: 14 + 6 + 1990 = 2010 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3, the Empress.
The same card can also be a "year card" when you use the current year instead of your birth year, and the "quintessence" of a reading when the numbers of all cards in the spread reduce to 8.
Path on the Tree of Life
The 22 Major Arcana are the 22 paths (numbered 11–32) linking the ten sephiroth of the Tree of Life. This card is path 19, joining Chesed · Mercy (expansion, generosity, stability) with Geburah · Severity (discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict), and the Hebrew letter ט Teth, meaning "serpent".
Read as a journey of the mind, the path teaches how to bring the power of Chesed down into Geburah, or how to climb from below to above. It crosses between the pillars, so it works to reconcile two forces.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Vulkanus and Cupido.
- Vulkanus (Vul)Vulkanus is power beyond what one person can resist: great inspiration or crushing pressure. Whatever it touches in a chart happens with intensity. Keywords: immense power, overwhelming drive, force hard to control, intensity
- Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging
Strength is immense force tamed by gentleness — Vulkanus — and Cupido is the bond between the woman and the lion.
