Imagery and symbols
- The upright sword in her right handDecisive judgement and truth cutting through confusion; double-edged, justice cuts both ways.
- The scales in her left handImpartial weighing: cause and effect, what is given and what is received.
- No blindfoldUnlike most statues of Justice, she sees the whole truth — not neutrality by not seeing.
- Two grey pillars and a purple veilThe balance and wisdom behind judgement. Like the High Priestess's pillars, but here the veil hides nothing; it is the backdrop of a court.
- The crown with a square jewelOrdered thought and stable law.
- A white shoe peeking from her robeA foot steps forward: Justice does not sit idle but is ready to act on the verdict.
Details most readers miss
- 11 reduces to 2, the High Priestess; both sit between pillars. The Priestess's inner knowledge becomes open judgement in Justice.
- Libra is ruled by Venus, so this justice is not punishment but the restoration of beauty and balance to what was lost.
- In the Thoth deck the card is Adjustment, suggesting justice is a process nature performs all the time.
History and origins
Justice is one of the four cardinal virtues of the Middle Ages, alongside Fortitude (Strength), Temperance and Prudence (absent from the tarot; some say it hides in another card). The woman with sword and scales descends from the Roman Justitia and Greek Themis.
The Marseille deck numbers the card VIII; Waite moved it to XI to match Libra in the Golden Dawn order. It carries Lamed (ox-goad), the stick that keeps the ox walking straight, as law nudges us back to balance — and 11 sits exactly in the middle of the 22 Majors.
The story of the card
The Wheel taught that life turns; Justice teaches that the turning has laws. The Fool must look honestly at his own actions, accept their results and repair what he got wrong.
Accepting that truth leads to the Hanged Man, where he must give up control to see the world from a new angle.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, The Star |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules Libra ♎︎, a cardinal Air sign ruled by Venus. The Sun passes through Libra (tropical zodiac) from 23 Sep – 22 Oct each year, and people born then often recognise this card's energy in themselves.
the energy of initiating — this matter wants you to make the first move The ruling planet adds themes of love, beauty, pleasure, money.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
The card's number 11 reduces to 2, so it belongs to constellation 2 together with The High Priestess, Judgement. This group is the knower who sees inner truth and weighs every side. If your birth-date total is 11, this is your Personality card and card 2 is your Soul card.
To find your birth cards with Mary K. Greer's method, add your birth day, month and year, then add the digits until the result is 22 or less. Born 14 June 1990: 14 + 6 + 1990 = 2010 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3, the Empress.
The same card can also be a "year card" when you use the current year instead of your birth year, and the "quintessence" of a reading when the numbers of all cards in the spread reduce to 11.
Path on the Tree of Life
The 22 Major Arcana are the 22 paths (numbered 11–32) linking the ten sephiroth of the Tree of Life. This card is path 22, joining Geburah · Severity (discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict) with Tiphareth · Beauty (harmony, the centre of the self), and the Hebrew letter ל Lamed, meaning "ox-goad".
Read as a journey of the mind, the path teaches how to bring the power of Geburah down into Tiphareth, or how to climb from below to above. It crosses between the pillars, so it works to reconcile two forces.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Kronos and Poseidon.
- Kronos (Kro)Kronos is the top of the hierarchy: rulers, experts and the ability to stand alone. It reads as rank, credibility and decisions made from above. Keywords: authority, high office, expertise, law, independence
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
Justice is law and judgement, Kronos; Poseidon is the truth the judgement must serve.
