Upright meaning
In general
A time to be alone, reflect and seek answers within. Turn down the outside noise, decline unnecessary plans and give yourself time to think deeply. What you learn now will guide you for a long while — or you may meet a teacher who shows the way.
Love
You may need personal space in a relationship, or be content being single for a while. Understanding yourself first makes your next love deeper. Quiet but profound love.
Work and study
Good for research, academic work, writing, long-term planning and focused solo work. Perhaps a time to ask whether your career still holds the meaning you want.
Money
Spend simply and carefully; review what you really need. Not a time to follow investment trends.
Health and vitality
The body needs rest and quiet. Virgo rules digestion and the intestines; simple eating helps a lot.
Inner life and growth
The best time for retreat, silent courses and searching for life's meaning.
The card's advice
Spend at least fifteen quiet minutes a day and ask yourself what truly matters most.
Reversed meaning
In general
Loneliness you didn't choose, or isolating until you're cut off from people. Or the reverse: fearing solitude so much you never hear your inner voice. Reversed, the card asks for balance between solitude and connection.
Love
Feeling lonely or abandoned, or closing yourself to love for fear of hurt. A partner may withdraw without explanation.
Work and study
Feeling alienated at work, or burying yourself in solo work and never asking for help.
Money
Beware of making financial decisions alone without consulting anyone.
Health and vitality
Loneliness affects mental health; reach out to someone you trust.
Inner life and growth
Seeking that has become escaping, or listening to outer teachers so much you forget yourself.
The card's advice
If you have withdrawn long enough, it's time to bring your light back and share it.
Imagery and symbols
- The lantern with a six-pointed starThe Seal of Solomon, wisdom uniting heaven and earth. Its light reaches one step at a time — just enough to see the way ahead.
- The long staffSelf-reliance and experience gathered over the whole journey.
- The grey cloakSimplicity, calm and no wish to be noticed.
- The snowy peakHeights of mind reached by climbing alone; the cold is the solitude he must accept.
- The bowed headHumility and inward attention. The Hermit isn't looking for anyone; he is looking for truth.
- The dark skyA time when the outer world goes quiet so the inner light shows.
Details most readers miss
- Standing on the summit with his lantern raised, the Hermit may not be seeking a path but lighting one for those coming up behind. The card can mean a teacher or guide.
- Virgo is the sign of detail and refinement, so the Hermit's solitude is not escape but sorting what matters from what doesn't.
- Nine is the last single digit before a new cycle; the Hermit sums up the lessons before the Wheel of Fortune turns again.
History and origins
In early Italian decks the card was Il Gobbo (the hunchback) or Il Tempo (Time): an old man with an hourglass — Father Time and Saturn. The hourglass was later redrawn as a lantern, and in the Marseille deck he became L'Hermite, the lantern-bearer.
The Golden Dawn gave the card Virgo and Yod (hand). Yod is the smallest Hebrew letter and the starting stroke of all the others, like a seed or first spark. Smith set the Hermit on a snowy peak holding a lantern with a six-pointed star inside.
The story of the card
Having learned inner courage from Strength, the Fool withdraws to understand everything that has happened. The Hermit is the stretch he walks alone — no teacher, no lover, only his own light.
This silence prepares him for the Wheel of Fortune, where he will see that life turns in cycles larger than himself.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Earth, the energy of money, work, the body and tangible security.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Earth is friendly with Water and opposed to Air. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Devil, The World |
| Friendly element (supports) | The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
When Earth dominates a spread: clinging to security and possessions; slow to move or change. When it is missing: Add Earth with a step-by-step plan, a budget and timeline, and care for your body.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules Virgo ♍︎, a mutable Earth sign ruled by Mercury. The Sun passes through Virgo (tropical zodiac) from 23 Aug – 22 Sep each year, and people born then often recognise this card's energy in themselves.
the energy of adapting — this matter is still in flux and asks for flexibility The ruling planet adds themes of communication, trade, study, paperwork.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
The card's number 9, so it belongs to constellation 9 together with The Moon. This group is the seeker who walks into silence and darkness to find their own light. If your birth-date total is 9, this is your Personality card and card 9 is your Soul card.
To find your birth cards with Mary K. Greer's method, add your birth day, month and year, then add the digits until the result is 22 or less. Born 14 June 1990: 14 + 6 + 1990 = 2010 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3, the Empress.
The same card can also be a "year card" when you use the current year instead of your birth year, and the "quintessence" of a reading when the numbers of all cards in the spread reduce to 9.
Path on the Tree of Life
The 22 Major Arcana are the 22 paths (numbered 11–32) linking the ten sephiroth of the Tree of Life. This card is path 20, joining Chesed · Mercy (expansion, generosity, stability) with Tiphareth · Beauty (harmony, the centre of the self), and the Hebrew letter י Yod, meaning "hand".
Read as a journey of the mind, the path teaches how to bring the power of Chesed down into Tiphareth, or how to climb from below to above. It crosses between the pillars, so it works to reconcile two forces.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Admetos and Poseidon.
- Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
The Hermit withdraws and stands still — Admetos — and the lantern is Poseidon's light of truth.
This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
