Upright meaning

In general

A time of awakening and an important decision. You see the past clearly and understand its lessons. Time to close old accounts, forgive and start again at a higher level. Important news may arrive, or you may feel called to do something meaningful.

Love

A relationship renewed, a reconciliation or a big decision about a shared future. Someone from the past may return with new understanding — or you are ready to close the old story completely.

Work and study

Changing career toward what fits your heart; an important evaluation or exam; a summons or offer that changes your life.

Money

Paying off debt, getting money back, or past financial decisions showing their results. Review your whole financial plan.

Health and vitality

Significant recovery, important test results or a decision to change your lifestyle for health.

Inner life and growth

Spiritual awakening and understanding of your life's purpose.

The card's advice

Write what you are ready to forgive — yourself and others — then answer the call you have heard for a long time but haven't heeded.

Reversed meaning

In general

Ignoring the inner call, judging yourself too harshly or staying stuck in past mistakes. Fear of others' judgement may stop you changing, or an important decision keeps being postponed.

Love

Refusing to forgive, holding on to the past or fearing a new start.

Work and study

Not daring to change jobs though it's time, or a disappointing evaluation.

Money

Consequences of past financial mistakes to deal with.

Health and vitality

Stress from self-blame; be kinder to yourself.

Inner life and growth

Blocking growth out of fear or self-doubt.

The card's advice

Stop passing judgement on yourself over and over. Learning from the past is different from living in it.

Imagery and symbols

  • The angel blowing a trumpetThe call that wakes you, important news, and a summons to a higher role.
  • The red cross on a white bannerBalance of opposing forces and the union of spirit and matter.
  • Man, woman and child rising from coffinsEvery part of us — thought, feeling and innocence — waking together; open arms are the answer to the call.
  • Coffins floating on waterThe past no longer sinks; the unconscious lifts what was buried into the light.
  • Icy mountains behindUnchanging truth and obstacles already overcome — the same mountains as in the Fool.
  • Their nakednessTotal sincerity before judgement: nothing can be hidden.

Details most readers miss

  • The card is not about being condemned but about being called to wake up. True judgement is seeing yourself honestly and choosing to begin again.
  • Shin's fire purifies, like the phoenix reborn from ashes after Death and the Moon.
  • 20 reduces to 2, sharing a constellation with the High Priestess and Justice: inner knowledge and justice become awakening at the final level.
  • The Thoth deck renames the card The Aeon, the change of an age of human consciousness.

History and origins

Judgement (Le Jugement) in the early decks follows the Christian Last Judgement: an angel blows a trumpet and the dead rise from their graves; some decks show God above.

The Golden Dawn gave the card the element of Fire and Shin (tooth), the third mother letter. Shin's shape is a three-tongued flame, and it also stands for Spirit, the fifth element. Smith drew an angel (usually identified as Gabriel, messenger and trumpeter) with a red-cross banner, and a family rising from coffins floating on water.

The story of the card

After the Sun's brightness, the Fool hears a trumpet calling him to rise into new life. He looks back over the whole journey honestly, forgives himself and others, and knows he is ready for his true role.

This call leads him to the final card, the World, where the journey completes its circle and all becomes one.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Fire, the energy of drive, courage and action.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Fire is friendly with Air and opposed to Water. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun
Friendly element (supports)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star
Opposing element (weakens)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon

When Fire dominates a spread: heat, haste and acting before thinking — watch for conflict and burnout. When it is missing: Add Fire by taking one small action now, setting a challenging goal and moving your body.

Sign, planet and timing

This card rules the element of Fire itself. Three Major Arcana belong to the three Hebrew "mother" letters — Aleph (Air), Mem (Water) and Shin (Fire) — while Earth shares the World with Saturn. So the card has no single sign; it carries the whole element.

Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence

The card's number 20 reduces to 2, so it belongs to constellation 2 together with The High Priestess, Justice. This group is the knower who sees inner truth and weighs every side. If your birth-date total is 20, this is your Personality card and card 2 is your Soul card.

To find your birth cards with Mary K. Greer's method, add your birth day, month and year, then add the digits until the result is 22 or less. Born 14 June 1990: 14 + 6 + 1990 = 2010 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3, the Empress.

The same card can also be a "year card" when you use the current year instead of your birth year, and the "quintessence" of a reading when the numbers of all cards in the spread reduce to 20.

Path on the Tree of Life

12345678910
Path 31

The 22 Major Arcana are the 22 paths (numbered 11–32) linking the ten sephiroth of the Tree of Life. This card is path 31, joining Hod · Splendour (intellect, logic, communication) with Malkuth · Kingdom (the physical world, tangible results), and the Hebrew letter ש Shin, meaning "tooth".

Read as a journey of the mind, the path teaches how to bring the power of Hod down into Malkuth, or how to climb from below to above. It crosses between the pillars, so it works to reconcile two forces.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Hades.

  • Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
  • Hades (Had)Hades is what lies beneath the surface: decay, illness and neglect on one side; on the other, digging up buried truth, history and work that demands depth. Keywords: the past, the hidden, depth, decay, old things, deep research

Judgement is awakening, Poseidon; the figures rising from the graves are the past called back up, Hades.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
