Upright meaning

In general

Regret, disappointment or mourning what has passed. The feeling is natural and deserves time, but do not forget what remains — the people still here and the opportunities still open.

Love

Disappointment in love, a break-up, or sorrow over a relationship that did not turn out as hoped. You may still be stuck in the past; love that remains, or people who care, are still there.

Work and study

Disappointment with results, a failed project or a missed chance. Draw the lessons, then look at what you can still do.

Money

Financial loss or regret over money spent. Assess what is left and make a new plan.

Health and vitality

Sadness affecting energy. Scorpio rules the reproductive and eliminative systems. If grief is heavy or long-lasting, talk to someone or seek professional help.

Inner life and growth

Learning from loss; sorrow that teaches you to value what you still have.

The card's advice

Give your grief the time it needs, and one day turn around and count the two cups still standing.

Reversed meaning

In general

Beginning to recover from regret, accepting what happened and turning toward what you still have — or, on the other side, suppressing sorrow and refusing to admit it hurts.

Love

Forgiveness and moving on, reconciling with someone you drifted from, or ready to open your heart again.

Work and study

Learning from failure and starting again; finding a way to salvage the situation.

Money

Starting to recover from losses; getting some of it back.

Health and vitality

Energy returning as the heart lightens.

Inner life and growth

Acceptance and letting go; calm after the storm.

The card's advice

Take one step across the bridge: do one small thing that used to make you happy.

Imagery and symbols

A figure in a black cloak bows over three spilled cups, not seeing the two still standing behind. In the distance a bridge crosses the river toward a house: loss and regret, with a way back.

  • A figure in a black cloakSorrow, mourning and shutting yourself off from the world.
  • Three spilled cupsWhat has already been lost: hopes, a relationship or a chance that cannot be recovered.
  • Two cups still standing behindWhat remains and still has value, visible only if you turn around.
  • The riverThe current of emotion and time; grief that must be allowed to flow through.
  • A bridge to a houseThe way back to stability still exists, when you are ready to cross.

Details most readers miss

  • He has his back to the two good cups. That is the heart of the card: sorrow is not wrong, but looking only one way hides what you still have.
  • The bridge is not far from him. The way out is not at the end of the world but a few steps away.
  • Of the Fives in the deck, the Five of Cups is the one where loss is most internal. What is gone may be an expectation that did not come true rather than something tangible.

History and origins

The Golden Dawn called this card the “Lord of Loss in Pleasure” and gave it the first decan of Scorpio, ruled by Mars. Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio, so feeling runs deep and strong; the loss here is not superficial but reaches the bottom of the heart.

Smith drew a figure in a black cloak, head bowed over three overturned cups whose contents have spilled, while two cups stand behind; a river and a bridge lead to a house. Waite writes that it is a card of loss, but something remains: three have been taken, but two are left.

The story of the card

The apathy of the Four ends in loss. Something once held is gone, and only now does he realise how much it was worth; grief floods out everything else.

When he turns to see the remaining cups, the next card, the Six of Cups, is a return to happy memories and childlike tenderness that help the heart heal.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Water, the energy of emotion, love, relationships and intuition.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Water is friendly with Earth and opposed to Fire. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon
Friendly element (supports)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World
Opposing element (weakens)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement

When Water dominates a spread: sensitivity and emotional decisions — you may drown in feelings or fantasy. When it is missing: Add Water by naming your feelings, listening to people close to you and giving time to relationships.

Sign, planet and timing

This card rules decan 1 of Scorpio (0°–10° Scorpio), ruled by Mars in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 23 Oct – 1 Nov each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.

Its meaning blends Mars (action, courage, competition, conflict) with Scorpio, a fixed Water sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is Death, and the card of the same planet is The Tower.

Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence

Minor cards numbered 5 belong to constellation 5 with The Hierophant, Temperance, the teacher and mediator who passes on values and finds the middle way. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Water. The number itself means conflict, instability and change.

On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity: discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict, in Briah · world of creation and feeling.

Path on the Tree of Life

12345678910
Sephirah 5

Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 5, Geburah · Severity — discipline, judgement, cutting away, conflict — on the Pillar of Severity (left). The Cups suit belongs to Briah · world of creation and feeling, so this card is the force of Geburah working in that world.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Cupido and Zeus.

  • Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging
  • Zeus (Zeu)Zeus is force aimed at one target, like fire inside an engine or a guided projectile. It reads as action, ambition, production and bringing something new into being. Keywords: creative force, fire, machines, directed energy, leadership, initiation

This match comes from the element of the Cups suit and the decan's planet, Mars.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
