Upright meaning

In general

Time to rest, stop thinking and step away from the turmoil — taking leave, sleeping enough or withdrawing somewhere quiet. Rest now is not laziness; it is necessary for better decisions later.

Love

A relationship that needs some space, a break from arguing, or a single person who should rest their heart before starting something new.

Work and study

Taking leave, reviewing plans, or a slow period. Use the time to rethink strategy instead of forcing hard work.

Money

Pause major financial decisions for now and review the situation clearly first.

Health and vitality

The body needs recovery and enough sleep; possibly convalescence after illness. Libra rules the kidneys and lower back.

Inner life and growth

Meditation, prayer and access to inner calm.

The card's advice

Switch off every notification for a day, or at least half a day, and truly rest.

Reversed meaning

In general

Moving again after recovery — or, on the other side, pushing on when the body needs rest, exhaustion piling up until you collapse, or resting so long it becomes avoidance.

Love

Talking again after time apart, or distance that lasts so long the relationship cools.

Work and study

Returning to work with fresh energy, or burning out because you would not rest.

Money

Ready to make financial decisions again.

Health and vitality

Do not push; the body is signalling you to stop. See a doctor if symptoms do not improve.

Inner life and growth

Restlessness that will not let you be still.

The card's advice

If you have rested enough, return step by step. If not, give yourself permission to rest a little longer without guilt.

Imagery and symbols

A knight lies with hands in prayer on a tomb in a church, like a carved effigy; three swords hang on the wall and one lies beneath him, under a stained-glass window: recovery, pausing to regather strength and peace after battle.

  • A knight's effigy lying in prayerPeaceful rest, prayer and stillness so that body and mind can recover.
  • Three swords hanging on the wallThe pain of the Three of Swords set aside for now: still there, but no longer piercing the heart.
  • One sword lying along the tombA single thought kept close, ready to take up again once rested.
  • A stained-glass windowOne figure kneeling before another, often read as asking for blessing, healing or help from something higher.
  • A quiet churchA sacred space for rest, away from the world's noise.

Details most readers miss

  • The knight is a carved effigy, not a corpse. The card does not mean death but a temporary stillness, like hibernation.
  • The three swords on the wall point down over the knight's head, chest and belly, like thoughts still hovering but no longer harming. Rest does not make problems vanish; it gives you strength to meet them.
  • Among the Fours, the Four of Swords is stability found by stopping — compared with the Four of Pentacles' stability by holding on and the Four of Wands' by celebrating.

History and origins

The Golden Dawn named this card the “Lord of Rest from Strife” and gave it the third decan of Libra, ruled by Jupiter. The planet of mercy and expansion brings calm after conflict; Libran balance returns through rest.

Smith drew the effigy of a knight lying on a tomb in a church, hands joined in prayer, three swords hanging point-down on the wall and a fourth lying along the tomb. Above is a stained-glass window showing one figure kneeling before another. Waite reads the card as vigilance, retreat, solitude, a hermit's repose and exile.

The story of the card

After the pain of the Three, the traveller must stop, lay down his swords and give time to healing. In the silence the mind slowly grows calm.

When rested and back in the world, the next card, the Five of Swords, brings the conflict waiting there and the question of what kind of victory is worth having.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star
Friendly element (supports)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement
Opposing element (weakens)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World

When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.

Sign, planet and timing

This card rules decan 3 of Libra (20°–30° Libra), ruled by Jupiter in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 13 Oct – 22 Oct each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.

Its meaning blends Jupiter (expansion, luck, wisdom, opportunity) with Libra, a cardinal Air sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is Justice, and the card of the same planet is Wheel of Fortune.

Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence

Minor cards numbered 4 belong to constellation 4 with The Fool, The Emperor, Death, the builder who knows when to build and when to let things end. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Air. The number itself means stability and structure.

On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 4, Chesed · Mercy: expansion, generosity, stability, in Yetzirah · world of formation and thought.

Path on the Tree of Life

Sephirah 4

Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 4, Chesed · Mercy — expansion, generosity, stability — on the Pillar of Mercy (right). The Swords suit belongs to Yetzirah · world of formation and thought, so this card is the force of Chesed working in that world.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Apollon.

  • Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
  • Apollon (Apo)Apollon, the first of Friedrich Sieggrün's points, means multiplication and spread: knowledge, trade, reputation and success that reaches beyond oneself. Keywords: expansion, multiplicity, science, commerce, success, fame

This match comes from the element of the Swords suit and the decan's planet, Jupiter.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
