Imagery and symbols

A queen sits in an abundant garden cradling a pentacle in her lap beneath a bower of roses; a rabbit sits in the corner and goat heads are carved on her throne: nurturing, abundance and warm security.

  • A pentacle held in her lapAttentive care of resources; she cradles wealth as a mother cradles a child.
  • A bower of roses overheadLove, beauty and abundance surrounding a well-tended life.
  • A goat's head on the throneCapricorn: patience, determination and the ability to climb to success.
  • A rabbit in the lower cornerAbundance, fertility and keen awareness of the surroundings.
  • Fruit and greeneryThe yield of care; growth that comes from attentiveness.
  • Mountains and open fields behindStability and the land she tends.

Details most readers miss

  • The little rabbit in the corner is often missed, yet it symbolises the abundance and fertility at the heart of this Queen.
  • She contemplates the pentacle thoughtfully, not greedily; Waite says she may see worlds in it. For her, wealth is a tool for care, not the goal.
  • The card rules mostly Capricorn, bringing Capricornian responsibility and planning, mixed with the generosity and optimism of late Sagittarius.

History and origins

In the Golden Dawn this card is the “Queen of the Thrones of Earth”, the Water of Earth, ruling from 20° Sagittarius to 20° Capricorn. Water nourishing earth is love expressed through tangible care: food, home and the security of loved ones.

Smith drew a queen on a throne in a garden under a bower of roses, a pentacle in her lap that she contemplates thoughtfully; the throne is carved with a goat's head and fruit, and a small rabbit sits in the lower corner. Waite describes her greatness of soul and serious intelligence, saying she may see worlds in the pentacle she holds, and reads the card as opulence, generosity, magnificence, security and liberty.

Rider–Waite–Smith names the court cards Page, Knight, Queen and King, while the Golden Dawn used Princess, Knight, Queen and Prince; the Golden Dawn Knight is the Fire figure and corresponds in energy to a King. This site uses the pairing common in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition: King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.

The story of the card

The Knight's diligence grows into the ability to nurture. The Queen of Pentacles does not merely work hard; she creates a home and a space where everyone feels safe and well fed.

If the Queen is abundance tended from within, the King of Pentacles is the one who builds and manages wealth so that it extends into the wider world.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Earth, the energy of money, work, the body and tangible security. As a court card it is "Water of Earth", blending the qualities of both.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Earth is friendly with Water and opposed to Air. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group

Friendly element (supports)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon
Opposing element (weakens)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star

When Earth dominates a spread: clinging to security and possessions; slow to move or change. When it is missing: Add Earth with a step-by-step plan, a budget and timeline, and care for your body.

Sign, planet and timing

This court card rules 20° Sagittarius – 20° Capricorn of the zodiac, straddling two signs as in the Golden Dawn system. The Sun passes through it around 12 Dec – 9 Jan, and people born then are often shown by this card when a reading asks about a person.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Admetos and Cupido.

  • Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings
  • Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging

This match comes from the element of the Pentacles suit, and the court card's sub-element, Water.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
