Reversed meaning

Imagery and symbols

A queen sits in profile holding an upright sword, her other hand extended as if inviting or forbidding; butterflies adorn her throne and a single bird flies overhead: sharp intelligence, directness and wisdom from experience.

  • An upright sword in her right handTruth, clarity and impartial judgement; she uses the sword to discern, not to attack.
  • A raised left handOpenness to communication; she is ready to listen, provided it is the truth.
  • A single bird high in the skyClear thinking, a perspective above the turmoil, and independence.
  • Butterflies on the throne and crownTransformation of the mind; thought matured by experience.
  • Clouds below the throneShe sits above the fog of emotion and sees the situation clearly.

Details most readers miss

  • The Queen of Swords sits in profile facing right, which many read as the direction of the future. She is not stuck in the past, though she has known sorrow.
  • There is only one bird flying high, unlike the flocks in other Swords cards: an independent mind that does not follow the crowd.
  • The card rules late Virgo to Libra, combining Virgo's perceptiveness and precision with Libra's justice and weighing.

History and origins

In the Golden Dawn this card is the “Queen of the Thrones of Air”, the Water of Air, ruling from 20° Virgo to 20° Libra. Water within air is feeling refined by reason: understanding others without being swept away by emotion.

Smith drew a queen in profile on a throne decorated with butterflies and a winged cherub's head, her right hand holding an upright sword and her left raised as if in welcome, a single bird flying high above. Waite describes her face as severe but chastened, suggesting familiarity with sorrow. Old texts link the card with widowhood, loss and separation, which modern readers interpret as strength born of having come through pain.

Rider–Waite–Smith names the court cards Page, Knight, Queen and King, while the Golden Dawn used Princess, Knight, Queen and Prince; the Golden Dawn Knight is the Fire figure and corresponds in energy to a King. This site uses the pairing common in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition: King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.

The story of the card

The Knight of Swords' speed collides with life's realities and passes through pain many times. The Queen is the one who turns those wounds into wisdom: she no longer deceives herself and lets no one deceive her.

If the Queen is understanding born of experience, the King of Swords is the one who turns that understanding into rules and fair judgement.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth. As a court card it is "Water of Air", blending the qualities of both.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

Friendly element (supports)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement
Opposing element (weakens)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World

When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.

Sign, planet and timing

This court card rules 20° Virgo – 20° Libra of the zodiac, straddling two signs as in the Golden Dawn system. The Sun passes through it around 13 Sep – 12 Oct, and people born then are often shown by this card when a reading asks about a person.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Cupido.

  • Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
  • Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging

This match comes from the element of the Swords suit, and the court card's sub-element, Water.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
