Imagery and symbols

A young man stands in a green meadow holding up a pentacle and studying it intently, ploughed fields and trees behind: learning, serious beginnings and new opportunities in money or work.

  • A youth gazing at the pentacleFocused interest, deep study and dedication to learning something new.
  • The pentacle hovering above his handsAn opportunity that has arrived but is not yet truly held; it must be learned and acted on first.
  • Ploughed fieldsPreparation; soil ready for planting.
  • Trees and mountainsLong-term growth and stable goals.
  • Green and brown clothingThe colours of Earth: growth and groundedness.

Details most readers miss

  • The pentacle floats above his hands rather than resting in them. The Page does not yet possess this opportunity; he is still studying it — the key meaning of the card: learn before you act.
  • He is the stillest of the four Pages: not quick like the Page of Swords nor dreamy like the Page of Cups. He studies the world slowly and patiently.
  • The ploughed field behind says the preparation is done; what waits is planting the first seed.

History and origins

In the Golden Dawn this card is the “Princess of the Echoing Hills, Rose of the Palace of Earth”, the Earth of Earth: the most concrete of all, making an opportunity real step by solid step.

Smith drew a young man standing in a meadow, raising a pentacle in both hands and gazing at it intently, with ploughed fields and trees behind. Waite describes him looking intently at the pentacle hovering over his raised hands, moving slowly and unaware of what is around him, and reads the card as application, study, scholarship and reflection.

Rider–Waite–Smith names the court cards Page, Knight, Queen and King, while the Golden Dawn used Princess, Knight, Queen and Prince; the Golden Dawn Knight is the Fire figure and corresponds in energy to a King. This site uses the pairing common in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition: King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.

The story of the card

After the completeness of the Ten, wealth passes to a new generation. The Page of Pentacles is the one determined to learn how to build security for himself, studying seriously before acting.

When knowledge becomes steady action, he grows into the Knight of Pentacles, who works patiently and reliably.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Earth, the energy of money, work, the body and tangible security. As a court card it is "Earth of Earth", blending the qualities of both.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Earth is friendly with Water and opposed to Air. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World
Friendly element (supports)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon
Opposing element (weakens)The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star

When Earth dominates a spread: clinging to security and possessions; slow to move or change. When it is missing: Add Earth with a step-by-step plan, a budget and timeline, and care for your body.

Sign, planet and timing

The Page rules no single decan but a whole quarter of the zodiac (0° Aries – 30° Gemini) in the Golden Dawn system. It is the root of the entire element of Earth and has no ruling planet.

Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 10, Malkuth · Kingdom — the physical world, tangible results — on the Middle Pillar of Balance. The Pentacles suit belongs to Assiah · world of matter, so this card is the force of Malkuth working in that world.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Admetos.

  • Admetos (Adm)Admetos is compression and stillness, like a seed buried before it sprouts. It reads as delay, limitation, land, resources and beginning again from a full stop. Keywords: standstill, delay, depth, land, raw material, endings that are beginnings

This match comes from the element of the Pentacles suit, and the court card's sub-element, Earth.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
