Eight of Swords Tarot card meaning (แปดดาบ)
The Eight of Swords is feeling trapped, without options and powerless — when in fact the ropes are loose, the feet are free and there is a gap to walk through. Most of this prison is built from thoughts and fear.

Upright meaning
In general
Feeling trapped, without options or restricted — but most of the limits come from thoughts and fear, not the whole truth. Separate what you can control from what you cannot, and start with the smallest step.
Love
Feeling stuck in a relationship, afraid to leave or to speak, or a single person believing they are not good enough. Negative beliefs about yourself are limiting you.
Work and study
Feeling stuck in a job you dislike and believing there is no choice, when there may be opportunities you have not looked at.
Money
Money worries that freeze you. Seek advice to see options you have overlooked.
Health and vitality
Anxiety affecting the body. Gemini rules the lungs, arms and nervous system. If you feel stuck in worry for a long time, ask for help.
Inner life and growth
Realising that most prisons are built from our own beliefs.
The card's advice
Write down one belief that makes you feel trapped, then look for evidence of how true it really is.
Reversed meaning
In general
Beginning to free yourself, seeing the way out, removing the blindfold and daring to walk out; thoughts clearing — or, on the other side, sinking so deep into helplessness that you need help from others.
Love
Daring to say what you held back, or to leave a relationship that confined you.
Work and study
Seeing new options and daring to change.
Money
Finding a way out of money problems.
Health and vitality
Anxiety beginning to ease.
Inner life and growth
Freedom from limiting beliefs.
The card's advice
The first step need not be big — just move one of the feet that were free all along.
Imagery and symbols
A bound, blindfolded woman stands among eight swords stuck in muddy ground — yet the swords don't fully surround her and the ropes are loose; a castle sits on a distant cliff: feeling trapped, mostly by one's own thoughts.
- A blindfolded womanUnable to see a way out because of fear or incomplete information, not because there is none.
- Loose ropes around her bodyRestrictions that look tight but can be undone, mostly conditions accepted by oneself.
- Free feetThe ability to walk away is still there; it only takes the courage to step.
- Eight swords planted around herThoughts, fears and criticism surrounding her — but not in a full circle; the front is open.
- Marshy ground with standing waterEmotions that make you feel stuck and slow to move.
- A castle on a cliffSafety, home or people who can help are not far away.
Details most readers miss
- The swords do not surround her completely; there is a gap in front wide enough to walk through. If she removed the blindfold, she would see the way out right before her.
- There is no guard watching her. What holds her is the situation she believes in, not a particular person.
- Compare the Two of Swords, also blindfolded but holding the swords herself. The Eight is the stage where thoughts begin to control us: from holding the swords, she has become surrounded by them.
History and origins
The Golden Dawn named this card the “Lord of Shortened Force” and gave it the first decan of Gemini, ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is in its detriment in Gemini: thought that should be expansive breaks into scattered pieces of information, until power is curtailed and decisions become impossible.
Smith drew a woman bound and blindfolded, standing among eight swords planted in marshy ground, with a castle on a cliff behind. Waite reads the card as bad news, violent chagrin, crisis, censure, power in trammels and calumny: a situation that looks more trapped than it really is.
The story of the card
The schemes and shortcuts of the Seven tangle until the traveller feels trapped. Thought, once a tool, has become a cage; she cannot see the way out, though it is there.
If the blindfold stays on, the next card, the Nine of Swords, is the night when worry keeps her awake.
Element and elemental dignities
This card belongs to Air, the energy of thought, communication, decisions and truth.
Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Air is friendly with Fire and opposed to Earth. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.
| Relation | Major Arcana in this group |
|---|---|
| Same element (strengthens) | The Fool, The Magician, The Lovers, Justice, The Star |
| Friendly element (supports) | The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement |
| Opposing element (weakens) | The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World |
When Air dominates a spread: overthinking, endless analysis, mental conflict and stress. When it is missing: Add Air by writing your thoughts down, gathering facts and speaking plainly.
Sign, planet and timing
This card rules decan 1 of Gemini (0°–10° Gemini), ruled by Jupiter in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 21 May – 30 May each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.
Its meaning blends Jupiter (expansion, luck, wisdom, opportunity) with Gemini, a mutable Air sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is The Lovers, and the card of the same planet is Wheel of Fortune.
Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence
Minor cards numbered 8 belong to constellation 8 with Strength, The Star, the one with inner courage and a hope that does not go out. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Air. The number itself means power, movement and mastery.
On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 8, Hod · Splendour: intellect, logic, communication, in Yetzirah · world of formation and thought.
Path on the Tree of Life
Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 8, Hod · Splendour — intellect, logic, communication — on the Pillar of Severity (left). The Swords suit belongs to Yetzirah · world of formation and thought, so this card is the force of Hod working in that world.
Uranian astrology connection
Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Poseidon and Apollon.
- Poseidon (Pos)Poseidon is the light of the mind: pure ideas, truth and spiritual experience. It reads as the inspiration that lets you see the whole picture clearly. Keywords: spirit, ideas, enlightenment, truth, clarity
- Apollon (Apo)Apollon, the first of Friedrich Sieggrün's points, means multiplication and spread: knowledge, trade, reputation and success that reaches beyond oneself. Keywords: expansion, multiplicity, science, commerce, success, fame
This match comes from the element of the Swords suit and the decan's planet, Jupiter.
This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
