Imagery and symbols

A stout man sits with arms folded, smiling contentedly, nine cups lined up on a draped, curved shelf behind him. Called "the wish card": satisfaction, pleasure and hopes fulfilled.

  • A smiling man with crossed armsSelf-satisfaction, confidence and the sense of having what he wants.
  • Nine cups on a curved standAccumulated success proudly displayed; everything in its place.
  • Blue cloth over the standSomething hidden beneath the visible happiness — the effort behind it, or what has not been expressed.
  • A red capDesire and life force fulfilled.
  • A bright yellow backgroundHappiness, warmth and the light of success.

Details most readers miss

  • He sits with arms crossed like the man in the Four of Cups, but with the opposite meaning: in the Four it is refusal, in the Nine contentment. The same posture can come from very different hearts.
  • He sits alone with no one to celebrate with. The happiness here is personal; happiness shared with family comes in the next card.
  • All the cups are behind him, not in his hands. He no longer needs to grasp anything; true contentment may be the end of striving.

History and origins

The Golden Dawn called this card the “Lord of Material Happiness” and gave it the second decan of Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Pisces, so this is the energy of luck, generosity and abundance of body and soul.

Smith drew a well-fed man sitting with arms crossed and a satisfied smile, nine cups arranged behind him on a curved, blue-draped stand. Waite reads it as concord, contentment, physical well-being, victory and satisfaction. The belief that this is the “wish card” that makes wishes come true is a tradition handed down among readers.

The story of the card

After his search for meaning in the Eight, he finds the satisfaction he longed for: he has what he wanted and feels fulfilled by the life he has built.

But personal happiness is not yet the peak of the Cups. In the next card, the Ten of Cups, that happiness widens to family and loved ones.

Element and elemental dignities

This card belongs to Water, the energy of emotion, love, relationships and intuition.

Under the Golden Dawn rules of elemental dignities, Water is friendly with Earth and opposed to Fire. Beside cards of the same or a friendly element this card grows stronger; beside an opposing element it weakens or shows its harder side.

RelationMajor Arcana in this group
Same element (strengthens)The High Priestess, The Chariot, The Hanged Man, Death, The Moon
Friendly element (supports)The Empress, The Hierophant, The Hermit, The Devil, The World
Opposing element (weakens)The Emperor, Strength, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, The Tower, The Sun, Judgement

When Water dominates a spread: sensitivity and emotional decisions — you may drown in feelings or fantasy. When it is missing: Add Water by naming your feelings, listening to people close to you and giving time to relationships.

Sign, planet and timing

This card rules decan 2 of Pisces (10°–20° Pisces), ruled by Jupiter in the Chaldean order. The Sun passes through it around 1 Mar – 10 Mar each year, so in a reading the card can point to timing.

Its meaning blends Jupiter (expansion, luck, wisdom, opportunity) with Pisces, a mutable Water sign. The Major Arcana card of the same sign is The Moon, and the card of the same planet is Wheel of Fortune.

Key of Life: number, birth cards and quintessence

Minor cards numbered 9 belong to constellation 9 with The Hermit, The Moon, the seeker who walks into silence and darkness to find their own light. This card shows that constellation's energy in the realm of Water. The number itself means near completion, ripening results.

On the Tree of Life the number corresponds to sephirah 9, Yesod · Foundation: the subconscious, dreams, inner images, in Briah · world of creation and feeling.

Path on the Tree of Life

12345678910
Sephirah 9

Minor cards sit on the sephiroth rather than the paths. This card is placed at sephirah 9, Yesod · Foundation — the subconscious, dreams, inner images — on the Middle Pillar of Balance. The Cups suit belongs to Briah · world of creation and feeling, so this card is the force of Yesod working in that world.

Uranian astrology connection

Uranian astrology (the Hamburg School) uses eight hypothetical points beyond Neptune alongside the real planets. This card resonates with Cupido and Apollon.

  • Cupido (Cup)Cupido, the first point proposed by Alfred Witte, describes people coming together: family, marriage, associations and society, and the art that grows out of shared feeling. Keywords: family, marriage, groups, community, art, belonging
  • Apollon (Apo)Apollon, the first of Friedrich Sieggrün's points, means multiplication and spread: knowledge, trade, reputation and success that reaches beyond oneself. Keywords: expansion, multiplicity, science, commerce, success, fame

This match comes from the element of the Cups suit and the decan's planet, Jupiter.

This correspondence is TarotMod's own synthesis from the meanings of the Hamburg School factors; it is not part of traditional tarot. Cast your Uranian chart
