A survey of typical dreams among Canadian students (Nielsen et al., 2003) found that about three in four had dreamt of falling, one of the most common themes. The feeling of falling and jerking awake as you drift off is a “hypnic jerk”, a muscle twitch as the body shifts into sleep, more likely when very tired, after a lot of caffeine or under stress.
